Clarify the Signal
Clarity of being, not clarity of wanting. The first step asks a question about identity and most people answer it with a shopping list.
You are trying to fill your emotional emptiness
with unsatisfied desires.
From the corpus · Posted 30 October 2017This is the first of the five steps, and the sentence that carries it is the one most readers skim past. Everything begins with clarity, not clarity of desire alone, but clarity of being. The distinction is the whole step. Wanting something clearly is easy and almost nobody has trouble with it. Being clear is a different operation and it is the one the step asks for.
The reason the distinction matters is stated plainly a line later. Many people ask for love, abundance, purpose, but their internal state is muddied with fear, doubt, and contradiction. A person can name a want with total precision while running, underneath it, a continuous low expectation that it will not arrive. Both are present. The want is the sentence and the expectation is the weather, and the weather is what the person actually lives in.
So the step does not ask what do you want. It asks: who would I be if I already had this? Then become that. That question is doing something specific and it is worth being exact about what. It converts a wanting problem, which has no handle on it, into a behavior problem, which does. A person cannot make themselves want something correctly. A person can work out what somebody who already had the thing would do on a Tuesday afternoon, and then do that.
This is also why the step is first rather than fourth. Every later step depends on there being something to align to, act from, release the route to, and step out of the old pattern toward. Without this one they are all pointed at nothing in particular, which is the reason the same five steps fail for the reader who starts at step two because step one sounded obvious.
There is a practical test for whether you have actually done the step. If your answer to who would I be is a feeling word, you have not done it yet. Happier, calmer, more confident, free: these are descriptions of an outcome, not of a person. If your answer is a set of things that person does, declines, notices, spends time on, and no longer argues about, you have done it. The second kind of answer can be acted on this week. The first kind cannot be acted on at all.
One last thing about the muddied internal state, because it is easy to hear as an accusation. It is not a flaw in the reader. Contradiction is the normal condition of a person who has wanted something for a long time without getting it, and it develops precisely because the wanting was sincere. The step is not asking you to stop being contradictory by an act of will. It is asking you to give the contradiction something concrete to be measured against, which is the only way it ever becomes visible.
New. The lower line must not be drawn as sinister or as sabotage. It is simply what has been said more often. Related to M-003 and to the Practical Lessons plate for S-014.
“I am already clear. I know exactly what I want and I could tell you in one sentence.”
Almost every reader can, and it is not what the step is asking. Naming a want with precision is a statement about a target. The step asks for a statement about a person, and those come apart immediately under one follow-up question: what does that person do differently on an ordinary day when nothing is happening? A reader who is genuinely clear can answer that in specifics within a minute. A reader who has only named a want will find the question strangely hard, and the difficulty is the finding rather than a failure. One note on the chapter's own framing. It describes the field responding to a dominant frequency, and that is a metaphor rather than a mechanism. Becoming specific about who you would be changes what you notice, what you attempt and what you decline, and those are sufficient to account for everything this step delivers.
M-016 The Ordinary Tuesday
From step one. Write the sentence who would I be if I already had this, and then answer it in twelve lines, every one of which must contain a verb and none of which may contain a feeling word. What does that person do in the morning. What do they decline. What do they no longer discuss. What do they spend money on and what have they stopped spending it on. Where are they at four in the afternoon. Twelve lines. Then circle the three that you could do this week without permission, money, or anyone else changing.
- Linear: this step is your natural ground, and the risk is that you convert it into a plan before it has become a description. Write who that person is and what they do, and forbid yourself the word first for the length of the exercise.
- Broad: you will produce a vivid answer in four minutes and it will be a scene rather than a person. Take the scene and extract only the verbs. Those are the answer; the scenery is not.
- Analytical: the objection forming is that becoming someone you are not is pretending, and that you cannot honestly act as a person you are not yet. Hold it. The step is not asking you to believe anything. It is asking you to specify a behavior set, which is a factual exercise and commits you to nothing.
The first prompt is the one readers avoid, and it is the one the whole step turns on. The gap between the two sentences is the material. Nobody arrives at this course without one.
Change your perspective and you will inherit clarity.Posted 1 May 2018

The counter-belief underneath the second sentence is M-022 and is not treated here. This step only asks you to write it down where you can see it.
