Which Mind Is Yours

The teaching

Most manifestation teaching is written by one kind of mind for the same kind of mind, and the other kinds conclude that the fault is in them. This module exists to stop that happening, and it is the only part of the course with no source outside these pages.

Three descriptions follow. They are not types you belong to. They are movements a mind makes, and most people run all three at different hours of the day; what varies is which one is running when something matters. The question is not which one you are. It is which one shows up when you are deciding, under pressure, about something you want.

The linear mind moves in sequence. One step leads to the next and the next is visible from where it stands. It is superb at execution and it wants the route before the destination.

The broad mind moves by association and picture. It sees the end state whole, without the route, and it moves between unrelated things at speed. It is superb at conceiving and it wants the destination before the route.

The analytical mind moves by taking things apart. Faced with a situation it asks why this is happening, and it is very good at answering. It wants the mechanism before either the route or the destination.

Read those three and one of them will feel like a description of you rather than of a category. That recognition is all the placement this module needs. There is no questionnaire here and there will not be one, because the moment a typology gets a score attached to it, people start collecting the score instead of using the description.

The plate
Three Routes to One Point
Three Routes to One Point. A single destination marked at the top right of the plate. Three paths reach it. One is a staircase, drawn in even steps, beginning at the bottom left. One is a single leap drawn as an arc from the bottom left, with the ground between unmarked. One is a dense cluster of lines circling the starting point without departing from it. All three paths must be drawn at the same weight; none is the correct one.

New. Equal line weight is the whole discipline of this image. Any variation in emphasis turns a description into a ranking, which is the thing the module is written to avoid.

Common misunderstanding

“I need to work out which type I am so I know what I am dealing with.”

Typing yourself is the failure mode rather than the goal. The three are descriptions of what a mind does, not compartments people live in, and most readers will recognize themselves in two of them depending on the situation. The useful question is never what am I; it is which movement is running right now, and is it the one this situation needs. A person who takes one label and carries it has swapped a useful observation for an identity, which is the exact mechanism the Practical Lessons spend six lessons dismantling.

The practice

M-011 Which One Showed Up

Written for this lesson. Over three days, note five moments when you had to decide something that mattered. For each, write which movement ran first: did you look for the next step, see the finished thing, or start explaining why the situation was as it was? Five entries is enough. You are not looking for a majority verdict. You are looking for what happens under pressure, which is often not what happens when you are relaxed.

Where this stops

This is a teaching device rather than a measured taxonomy. Nothing here has been tested, no instrument produced it, and the three are not claimed to be exhaustive or mutually exclusive. It earns its place by being useful for teaching, which is a different and lower claim than being true about how minds are built. Treat anyone who sells you a validated version of this with the suspicion you would apply to any other unreplicated scale.

In your own words

The third prompt is the module's whole justification, and most readers have an example ready before they finish reading it.

M-012 · Lesson 2 of 5

The Linear Mind

Superb at execution. It will not accept a destination it cannot see a staircase to, and it calls the refusal realism.

Doorway

Why follow a path

when you can create your own?

From the corpus · Posted 9 May 2017
The teaching

The linear mind moves one step at a time and each step is chosen because the one before it is complete. This is not a limitation. It is the reason anything ever gets finished, and a world made entirely of the other two kinds would be full of magnificent unbuilt things.

Its gift is the rarest of the three and the most undervalued in this field: once it accepts a path, it will actually walk it. Rung four, the two hundred mornings with no story in them, is where the other two minds fall off and where this one simply proceeds. If you are linear and you have made it to habit before, you already possess the capacity that most of this genre is trying and failing to teach.

The failure is at the other end. A linear mind cannot hold a destination for which it cannot already see the route, so when a large outcome is proposed it does not evaluate the outcome. It searches for the staircase, finds none, and discards the destination. From inside, this feels like prudence. It has the texture of being sensible, which is why it is almost never examined.

The tell is the word realistic, and specifically how fast it arrives. A linear mind will say a thing is not realistic within a second or two of hearing it, which is far too fast for an evaluation to have happened. What actually happened is a route search that came back empty. Those are different operations and the speed gives it away.

The remedy is not to imagine harder, which does not work and feels absurd to this mind. It is to invert the order. Take the destination as given rather than as proposed, and ask a smaller question: not how would I get there, but what is the single next step that someone who was going there would take this week. A linear mind can almost always answer that, because it is a step question, and it is the only question this mind cannot refuse.

Done repeatedly, that produces the staircase from the bottom rather than requiring it in advance, which is how staircases are actually built.

The plate
The Missing Tread
The Missing Tread. A staircase rising toward a destination, complete except that the treads stop three steps up and the rest of the flight is absent. A figure stands on the highest existing tread, turned away from the destination, already descending. The destination itself is drawn clearly and is not obscured, so the viewer can see that the figure turned back from something visible.

New. The figure must be turning away rather than looking up, because the lesson is that the evaluation never happened. Related to H-007 Belief.

Common misunderstanding

“Being realistic is a strength, and this lesson is asking me to abandon it.”

It is a strength, and the lesson is not asking for it to be abandoned. It is asking for it to be applied where it belongs. Realism is a judgment about a route, and it is excellent at that. What this mind does is apply a route judgment to a destination and mistake the result for a verdict on the destination. Keep the realism and move it downstream: be as unsparing as you like about the next step, and stop letting the absence of a full route decide what is worth wanting.

The practice

M-012 The Week Step

Written for this lesson, and calibrated for this mind. Take the destination you named in Module Two and stop trying to plan it. Write only this: what would someone who was going there do this week? One thing, doable in seven days, requiring no permission and no new resources. Do it. Then next week, write the question again from wherever you now stand. You are not building a plan. You are building a tread at a time, which is the only way this mind builds anything.

In your own words

The third prompt is the one worth sitting with. A linear mind that never sets its own destination becomes extremely good at completing other people's, and that is a real cost that this lesson's remedy is designed to recover.

The Broad Mind

It can see the end state whole. Its failure is that seeing it feels like arriving.

Doorway

Reality can only take you

as far as your limitations will permit.

Your imagination begins

where there are no barriers

to restrain it.

After the corpus · Posted 9 May 2017
The teaching

The broad mind moves by picture and association. It can hold a finished thing in mind without any idea how it would be reached, and it moves between unconnected domains quickly enough that the connections look like intuition. Most of this field is written by and for this mind, which is why most of this field is inspiring and does not work.

The gift is real and should not be patronized. Conceiving an end state that does not yet exist is the rarest capacity in the ladder and everything else is downstream of it. Rung one and rung two belong to this mind, and it performs them without effort while the other two are still asking clarifying questions.

The failure is at rung three, and it is specific: for this mind, vividness is indistinguishable from progress. Imagining the shop in detail produces a genuine feeling of advancement, and the feeling is chemically similar to the one that follows an actual step. So the mind takes its reward at rung two and never spends it on rung three, and a year later there is a magnificent vision and no bread.

The second failure is lateral movement. This mind can conceive so easily that when one destination becomes difficult, another arrives immediately and is equally vivid. That is not exploration; it is escape with a better vocabulary, and it is why this mind can spend a decade at rung two and feel busy throughout.

The remedy is the opposite of the linear mind's. It does not need a next step, which it can generate endlessly. It needs a constraint and a witness: one destination named in writing and not revised for a fixed period, and one person who will ask about that same destination and no other. The mechanism that makes the remedy work is not motivation. It is that a second party removes the option of lateral movement, which is the only failure this mind cannot correct alone.

That is also why the remedy below pairs a fixed destination with another person rather than with a private resolution. A constraint you set for yourself is easy to revise, and revising is this mind's failure mode, so the constraint has to be held by someone who will ask.

The plate
The Gallery
The Gallery. A figure standing in a long gallery hung with large, finished, beautiful paintings of possible lives. All are complete. At the far end, a small plain door stands slightly open, and the floor in front of it is undisturbed while the floor before the paintings is worn. The paintings must be genuinely appealing; nothing in this image should mock the figure.

New. The worn floor is the evidence and the undisturbed floor is the lesson. Related to R-024 Play. The instruction that the paintings be appealing is not decoration: an image that ridicules this mind will be dismissed by the readers who most need it.

Common misunderstanding

“I am not doing anything, I am just bad at follow-through and need more discipline.”

Discipline is the wrong diagnosis and the reason so many attempts fail. The problem is not weakness of will at the point of action; it is that the reward already arrived at the point of imagination, so there is nothing left to spend. You cannot discipline your way past a debt that has already been paid. What works is either taking the reward away, by not revisiting the vision, or putting an external claim on the action, which is what a witness is for.

The practice

M-013 One Destination, Thirty Days

Written for this lesson. Name one destination in writing, with a date, and commit to not revising it for thirty days. Tell one person and ask them to ask you about that destination and no other, weekly. During the thirty days, do not spend time elaborating the vision; it is already vivid enough and further detail is the reward being drawn down again. Every week, one action. The constraint is the practice. The action is only the evidence that the constraint held.

In your own words

The first prompt is often uncomfortable to answer honestly, and the number is usually higher than the reader expects. That number is the diagnosis.

M-014 · Lesson 4 of 5

The Analytical Mind

The hardest of the three to teach, the least likely to be fooled, and the one whose failure is the most self-concealing.

Doorway

A thinker becomes a danger to themselves,

but a dreamer becomes a danger to thinkers.

From the corpus · Posted 1 August 2017
The teaching

The analytical mind takes the present situation apart in order to explain it, and it is very good at this. Given any circumstance it will produce a causal account, and the account will usually be accurate, well evidenced, and better than anything the other two minds could construct.

The gift is real and the course should say so plainly, because this reader has been condescended to by every book in this genre and can feel it coming. This mind will not accept a claim it cannot inspect. That makes it the hardest to teach and the least likely to be taken in, and it means that a conclusion this mind reaches by its own inspection is one it will not abandon at the first setback, which is more than can be said for the other two.

The failure is structural rather than moral, and it is this: explanation is a closed loop. A mind fully occupied accounting for the situation it is in has no attention left over to occupy a different one. Understanding why things are as they are is genuinely satisfying, which is the trap, because the satisfaction is indistinguishable from progress and arrives without anything having changed.

There is a second and sharper version. A person who can give a complete causal account of their circumstances has, in the act of giving it, placed themselves inside the account as an effect. The explanation is of a situation that produced them. It is very difficult, from inside a well-constructed account of why you are where you are, to also picture yourself as the cause of somewhere else, because the two pictures require you to occupy different positions in the same diagram.

The remedy is not to think less, which this mind will not do and should not be asked to. It is to change what the thinking is aimed at. An explanation is retrospective by construction; a hypothesis is not. So the move is to convert the whole enterprise into an experiment: a stated prediction, a fixed period, a review date, and a pre-committed account of what would count as it not working.

That frame is not a trick to get this mind to comply. It is the only frame under which the request is actually reasonable. The course is asking someone to act on a mechanism they cannot yet verify; an experiment with a falsification condition is the honest form of that request, and this mind is right to have refused every version that was not.

The plate
The Complete Account
The Complete Account. A figure at a desk, surrounded by a diagram of their own circumstances drawn with real care: arrows, causes, contributing factors, all of it accurate and all of it converging on the figure, who is drawn inside the diagram as a terminal node. Outside the diagram's border, faint and unattended, a second diagram is beginning with a single arrow leaving the figure. The completed diagram must look genuinely impressive.

New, and the hardest plate in the module to get right. The finished diagram must be admirable rather than absurd, because the lesson's claim is that the analysis is good, not that it is foolish. The second arrow must be the only thing in the image that is unfinished.

Common misunderstanding

“This lesson is telling me to stop thinking critically and just believe things.”

The opposite. The lesson takes the position that this mind was right to refuse the unfalsifiable version, and it offers a version that can fail. Nothing in the course asks you to suspend judgment. What it asks is that the judgment be applied prospectively, to a stated prediction over a stated period, rather than only retrospectively to an account of why things are as they are. A critical faculty pointed only backwards is not skepticism; it is commentary.

The practice

M-014 The Experiment

Written for this mind specifically. Write four things. The hypothesis, stated so it could be wrong: if I change what I expect about X and act accordingly, then Y will be observably different. The period, fixed in advance, and ninety days is the usual minimum given the lag. The measure, stated now rather than chosen later. And the falsification condition: what would have to be true at the end for you to conclude this does not work. Then run it, and honor the review date whichever way it goes. One participant and no control is a decision procedure rather than a study. Its value is that it commits you in advance to a period and a verdict, which is what stops an indefinite evaluation from running forever. Do not report the result as though it established anything general.

In your own words

The third prompt is the lesson's sharpest point and should not be softened in the workbook. The account will be good. The question is what it permits.

Teaching Yourself in Your Own Language

One method, three translations. This is the lesson the rest of the course depends on.

Doorway

To find mediocrity,

you must always follow a path.

To find greatness,

you will need to create your own.

From the corpus · Posted 10 December 2019
The teaching

Everything from Module Four onward is a single method. This lesson is the instruction for translating it, and without it the remaining fifteen lessons will work for one reader in three.

For the linear mind, translate every destination into a next step. This mind does not need the vision expanded and will resent the attempt; it needs the question reduced until it becomes a step question, which is the only kind it cannot refuse. When a practice in this course asks you to imagine, convert it: what would someone who had already imagined this do on Tuesday.

For the broad mind, translate every practice into a constraint and a deadline. This mind does not need more picture and will happily generate more if invited; it needs the picture fixed, the revisions forbidden for a stated period, and somebody asking. When a practice asks you to clarify a vision, you have already done that part. Skip to the part that has a date on it.

For the analytical mind, translate everything into an experiment with a review date. This mind needs the mechanism before the practice, which is why M-007 exists and why it is placed before anything is asked of anyone. When a practice arrives without a stated mechanism, do not perform it on faith; state the hypothesis yourself, fix the period, and run it as a test you are permitted to fail.

Two things follow that are worth naming. The first is that the translations are not equally hard. The linear translation is mechanical and can be done in a sentence. The broad translation requires another person, which most readers will skip and which is the reason it fails. The analytical translation requires the course to have earned the mind's trust first, which is a thing the course can lose in one overclaimed paragraph.

The second is that you will need more than one translation. A person is rarely one movement in every domain, and the mind that runs your work is often not the mind that runs your relationships. Translate per situation rather than once for life, which is the same instruction M-011 gave and is worth repeating here because by now the reader has probably acquired a label.

The plate
One Instruction, Three Deliveries
One Instruction, Three Deliveries. A single sentence at the center of the plate, rendered identically three times below it, each time with different apparatus attached: the first with a single step marked beneath it and a boot above; the second with a clamp holding it in place and a calendar beside it; the third with a hypothesis bracket around it and a date stamped at its end. The sentence must be word-for-word the same in all three.

New. The identical sentence is the argument: the method does not change, only its delivery. Related to A-004 Self-Observation.

Common misunderstanding

“I should pick my translation and use it for everything.”

Translate per situation. A person can be linear about money and broad about relationships and analytical about health, and the translation that unlocks one domain will be exactly wrong in another. The module has spent four lessons trying not to hand anyone a label, and the last thing it should do is hand out three. What it hands out is three tools, and the skill is noticing which one the current situation is asking for.

The practice

M-015 Translate One

Written for this lesson, and it is the practice that makes the rest of the course usable. Take any one practice from Module One or Two that you did not complete. Work out which movement was running when you abandoned it. Then rewrite the practice in that movement's language: reduce it to a next step, or attach a constraint and a witness, or convert it to a hypothesis with a review date. Then do the rewritten version. Keep the rewrite; you will be doing this for every practice in Modules Four and Five.

In your own words

This is the only practice in the course that operates on the course itself, and it is placed here rather than at the end because everything after it works better once the reader has done it once.
