Two Waves of the Same Ocean
Separateness is a concept that lives in the mind and nowhere else. The deepest bar in the cell, and the only one made of an idea.
Two waves of the same ocean
argue about which is wetter.
Two flames of the same fire
argue about which is hotter.
Two voices of the same silence
argue about which is louder.
Separateness is a concept
which lives in our mind.
Nowhere else.
The Way · Pillar 7, The Illusion of SeparationOf all the bars in the cell walked so far, the deepest is not iron. It is a certainty: I am alone in here. One skin, one name, one small lit room, and outside it, everyone else.
Look at the skin. We call it a border. It is a meeting place. The air you are breathing at this moment was the world; now it is you; in a few seconds it is the world again. What kind of wall opens with every breath?
The wave is the image Pillar 7 returns to, and it is exact. A wave rises from the sea and takes itself for a self. It measures itself against the others, taller than, shorter than. It fears the shore all its life. And it was never anything but water. Nothing was born when it rose and nothing will be lost when it lands.
Then the pillar offers a reason for the forgetting, offered as a perhaps rather than as a fact, and the course keeps that qualifier. Perhaps, before all things, there was a stillness with no second, and in the stillness a question stirred: what am I? To know itself, the One became many, put on ten thousand masks, and forgot on purpose that every face was its own. A game of hide and seek is ruined by a seeker who knows every hiding place.
The part of this that can be checked without any metaphysics at all is the evidence of feeling. Watch how it refuses our walls. Laughter leaps from stranger to stranger. Grief in one house dims the lamps of a whole street. A kindness done to another warms the hand that gave it. If we were truly separate, how does it cross?
And the consequence, which is the reason this lesson sits where it does in the course rather than at the end: cruelty is a wound the One gives itself with its own hand, and kindness is the One beginning to remember. The forgetting was not a fall. It was the opening move. Every moment a mask grows thin, every recognition passing between two faces, is the whole remembering itself with the eyes it lent you.

“If we are all one, then boundaries do not matter and my individual life is not real.”
The wave is real. It has a height, a direction and a duration, and while it exists it is genuinely that wave. What Pillar 7 denies is not the wave's existence but its separateness, which is a different claim. This also means the teaching gives no licence at all in the direction people sometimes take it: oneness is not a reason to override another person's boundaries, and a philosophy that dissolves the individual is no closer to the truth than one that isolates them.
P-028 Silent Goodwill · Silent Goodwill
Practise on a stranger: silently wish them what you wish yourself. Notice the wall thin. Kindness done this way is not a favour to them; it is a remembering.
What thinned, in me, when I wished it for someone I will never meet?
Silent goodwill is done at a distance and needs no response. Do not approach strangers, and do not extend this to someone who has harmed you until you have decided that safely and on your own terms. Compassion never requires access.

Behind the Curtain's treatment of the one becoming many was S-005 and is not restated. Book II chapter 23 develops interwoven existence at greater length and is the reference for a reader who wants it. What keeps the many turning and wanting, which is the question Pillar 7 ends on, is S-022.
